A 36-year-old man from Mescalero, New Mexico, has been sentenced to two years in prison for his role in a brutal domestic violence attack that left his victim injured and seeking medical attention.
Lance Marion Cojo, an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, pleaded guilty to one count of assault of an intimate or dating partner resulting in substantial bodily injury and one count of assault of an intimate or dating partner by strangling on April 26.
The attack occurred on December 31, 2021, on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in Otero County, New Mexico. Over the course of two days, the victim, identified as Jane Doe, a member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, was severely beaten by Cojo.
The assault resulted in serious injuries to Jane Doe, including a collapsed lung, fractured ribs, and bruising to both eyes, face, neck, and ribs. She was taken to a medical center for treatment.
Cojo will be subject to three years of supervised release upon his release from prison. The Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated the case, with Assistant United States Attorney Matilda McCarthy Villalobos prosecuting the case.
