Laredo Teacher Ortiz Indicted in Child Porn Case

LAREDO, Texas – A classroom is supposed to be a safe haven for children. But for 41-year-old Roberto Ortiz Jr. of Laredo, Texas, that trust has been shattered. Ortiz has been formally charged with federal crimes related to the possession, receipt, and distribution of child pornography, according to U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.

A federal grand jury handed down a three-count indictment against Ortiz on June 25. He is scheduled to appear for arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Judge Diana Song Quiroga on July 5 at 10:15 a.m. The charges stem from an investigation that began back in March, when law enforcement agencies reportedly received four files containing child pornography originating from a Laredo IP address allegedly linked to Ortiz and shared through a peer-to-peer (P2P) application.

The investigation intensified, culminating in a search warrant executed at Ortiz’s residence on June 4. According to the charges, Ortiz allegedly granted authorities access to his computer and willingly showed investigators where the illegal content was stored. The search reportedly uncovered numerous files depicting child pornography, including the four files initially received by law enforcement. Ortiz is currently employed as a teacher at a local high school, but authorities have stated there is, as of yet, no evidence linking his alleged criminal activity to his professional life.

The FBI spearheaded the investigation, working in conjunction with the Laredo Child Exploitation Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine A. Cortez is prosecuting the case. This prosecution is part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice (DOJ) in May 2006 to aggressively combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

If convicted on all counts, Ortiz faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000. PSC brings together federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute individuals involved in the sexual exploitation of children, while also prioritizing the location and rescue of victims. More information on PSC can be found on the DOJ’s dedicated webpage: DOJ’s PSC page. Resources for internet safety education are also available on the site.

It is crucial to remember that an indictment represents a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not proof of guilt. As with all criminal cases, Roberto Ortiz Jr. is presumed innocent until proven guilty through due process of law. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available.
