GAINESVILLE, Ga. – In a shocking turn of events, Larry Steven Grogan, a 50-year-old resident of Danielsville, Georgia, has been charged with the murder of U.S. Postal Service mail carrier Asa Wood, Jr. The tragic incident occurred on August 7, 2021, in Commerce, Georgia, while Wood was delivering mail.
According to the indictment, Grogan allegedly shot Wood in the left femur and drove away, leaving him to die in his postal vehicle at the scene. Wood, a dedicated mail carrier for over 20 years, had been a beloved member of the community.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Banks County Sheriff’s Office. The exceptional joint effort resulted in Grogan’s arrest, and he is currently facing serious charges, including murder, assault on a federal employee using a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm resulting in death, and felon in possession of a firearm.
Asa Wood’s family and the U.S. Postal Service have expressed their deepest condolences to the family of the victim. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Keen.
The U.S. Attorney’s Public Affairs Office has confirmed that Grogan is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt at trial. The public is reminded that the indictment only contains charges.
