INDIANAPOLIS – Justice arrived hard and fast for John Thomas, 40, of Detroit, Michigan, who today received a life sentence without parole for masterminding a brutal kidnapping scheme that terrorized an Indianapolis family. U.S. District Chief Judge Richard L. Young delivered the sentence following Thomas’ conviction in September 2016 on two counts of kidnapping and one count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping. The case, a tangled web of drugs, stolen money, and shocking violence, is finally closed.
“Mr. Thomas is a career criminal with previous convictions in Detroit for home invasions and drug trafficking,” stated United States Attorney Josh J. Minkler. “When Thomas came to Indianapolis to kidnap two children, law enforcement ensured that his career would come to an end – permanently. Thomas will not sell any more drugs, he will not break into anyone’s home, and will not kidnap any more children.” Minkler rightly lauded the combined efforts of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) in bringing Thomas to justice.
The nightmare began February 28, 2015, when Thomas’ former girlfriend (Individual A) allegedly absconded with a substantial quantity of narcotics and the profits from their drug operation, fleeing to Indianapolis with her minor child. Thomas, enraged by the theft, assembled a crew and descended on the city, initiating a desperate search. The search culminated in a terrifying home invasion on LaSalle Street, March 2, 2015. There, members of the conspiracy snatched Individual A’s minor siblings, spiriting them away to Detroit and Kentucky as leverage for ransom.
The details of the abduction are chilling. Investigators revealed the victims were subjected to horrific treatment: hooded to prevent identification, bound with zip-ties, and even had their fingers deliberately cut in a desperate attempt to force them to reveal the location of Individual A and the stolen narcotics. Thankfully, both victims were recovered safely after Thomas’ arrest. The cruelty displayed by Thomas and his crew underscores the depravity at the heart of this case.
FBI Special Agent in Charge, W. Jay Abbott, emphasized the collaborative nature of the investigation. “The swift and safe return of the victims and apprehension of the subjects was the result of the cooperative efforts of Federal, State and Local law enforcement agencies.” That cooperation proved critical in dismantling the conspiracy and bringing these criminals to account. Five co-conspirators have already pleaded guilty and received their sentences: Alaa Al-Salehi, a/k/a Big Boi, 24, received 132 months; April Sandell, 27, 120 months; Bernando Reeves, a/k/a C-Note, 22, 72 months; Mohammed Karkash a/k/a MJ, 24, 36 months; and Ali Hussain Ashore, 28, 18 months.
Assistant United States Attorneys Tiffany J. McCormick and Jeffrey D. Preston successfully prosecuted the case. Thomas’ life sentence serves as a stark warning: bring your criminal enterprise to Indiana, and you’ll face the full force of federal law. This isn’t just about drugs or stolen money; it’s about protecting innocent lives and ensuring that predators like John Thomas are permanently removed from the streets.
