An Akron man is behind bars after being convicted of a devastating crime that left a community shaken.
Lashawn Johnson, 40, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for firearms violations, a crime that has far-reaching consequences for public safety.
According to court records and statements in court, Johnson pointed a gun in the face of another man outside a convenience store in Akron on February 4. The victim, who made a 911 call, reported that Johnson threatened him before the police arrived.
When Akron Police officers responded to the scene, they found Johnson inside the convenience store. He attempted to leave and fought with the officers, who eventually found a loaded firearm and less than a gram of methoxyacetylfentanyl in his possession.
Johnson’s prior convictions for trafficking cocaine and prior felony convictions for trafficking heroin and cocaine in the Summit County Court of Common Pleas make him ineligible to possess a firearm. His actions put innocent lives at risk and demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron P. Howell following an investigation by the Akron Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. This collaborative effort ensures that those who break the law will be held accountable.
This sentencing serves as a reminder that firearms violations have severe consequences. It is imperative that we take action to prevent such crimes from occurring in the future.
