LaTavis Deyonta Mackroy, 29, of Orlando, is headed back to federal prison — this time for 20 years — after robbing three banks during weekend passes from a halfway house. U.S. District Judge Paul G. Byron handed down the sentence following a November 4, 2022, jury conviction on three counts of bank robbery and one count of attempted bank robbery.
Mackroy, already serving time for a 2014 pawn shop robbery in Apopka, exploited a home pass program meant to ease reentry. On April 16, 2022, he hit the Fairwinds Credit Union in Winter Park, passing a demand note and threatening the teller. He walked out with $3,231 and quietly returned to the halfway house the next day — setting the stage for more.
The following weekend, Mackroy escalated. On April 22, he robbed a Chase Bank in Kissimmee, grabbing $4,000 after passing a threatening note to the teller. The next day, he struck again at TD Bank in Winter Park, fleeing with $2,820. That same day, he attempted to rob a Regions Bank in Orange City — but the teller walked away, forcing Mackroy to flee empty-handed.
His downfall came from what he left behind. Despite wearing a face mask and sunglasses during all four incidents, Mackroy failed to retrieve the demand note during the failed Orange City attempt. FBI fingerprint analysis pulled four latent prints — all matching Mackroy’s federal records. The slip sealed his fate.
Investigators piled on. Surveillance footage matched clothing seized from Mackroy at the halfway house. Cellphone and vehicle GPS data placed him at every scene. Mackroy was still under federal supervision from his 2014 conviction — a detail that intensified the court’s wrath.
At sentencing, Judge Byron cited Mackroy’s extensive criminal history, the threat of a firearm in one note, and his repeated lies under oath during pre-trial proceedings in both 2014 and 2022. The FBI led the probe with support from Winter Park PD, Osceola County SO, Orange City PD, and Seminole County SO. Prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dana E. Hill and Michael P. Felicetta, the case exposed a brazen breach of trust — one that cost Mackroy two decades behind bars.
