GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: A Lawrence County man has been locked away for failing to comply with sex offender registration laws. James Andrew Williams, 45, of the county, was sentenced in federal court to 18 months imprisonment, a harsh penalty imposed by Senior United States District Judge Gustave Diamond.
The prosecution revealed that Williams, between December 1, 2009, and March 2, 2010, violated the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act by failing to register as required. The Assistant United States Attorney Jessica Lieber Smolar led the government’s case against him.
United States Attorney David J. Hickton praised the efforts of the United States Marshals Service in their investigation that led to Williams’ conviction. This case is a part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative aimed at tackling child sexual exploitation and abuse. For more information on this critical project, visit www.justice.gov/psc.
Williams’ sentence includes 10 years of supervised release following his prison term. His failure to register has sent a strong message about the seriousness with which the justice system treats non-compliance with sex offender laws.
The community in Lawrence County is breathing easier with this conviction, a testament to the ongoing fight against sexual predators and their disregard for legal obligations. The public’s safety remains the priority as the federal government continues its robust efforts to locate, apprehend, and prosecute those who exploit children.
