PORTLAND, MAINE: Luis Medina, 49, from Lawrence, Massachusetts, has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for submitting a false document to a government agency, social security fraud, and aggravated identity theft.
Medina’s crime spree began in August 2015 when he was employed by an asbestos abatement contractor. He used a fake name and social security number to infiltrate the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery. With the falsified information, Medina successfully gained access to sensitive areas of the shipyard.
According to Assistant United States Attorney Craig M. Wolff, Medina faces up to five years in prison for the false document charge, a $250,000 fine on each count of social security fraud, and a mandatory two-year consecutive sentence for the aggravated identity theft charge. His sentencing will follow a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.
The investigation into Medina’s deceitful activities was led by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, New Hampshire State Police, and the Social Security Administration, Office of the Inspector General.
Medina’s illegal actions have garnered significant attention from the Grimy Times as it continues to scrutinize white-collar crime and public corruption in Maine. The case serves as a stark reminder of the lengths individuals will go to gain unauthorized access to sensitive areas.
