Lehigh Valley Hospital Network Hit with $2.75M Fine for Drug Thefts

PHILADELPHIA — A massive $2.75 million fine has been levied against the Lehigh Valley Hospital Network (LVHN) for a staggering series of drug thefts and violations of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).

The network’s pharmacy technician, identified only as ‘Employee X,’ is accused of using another employee’s password to pilfer controlled substances on approximately 40 occasions. The thief then concocted fake records to mask the discrepancies.

But LVHN’s troubles didn’t end there. Allegations also surface that the hospital failed to implement effective controls at various facilities, leading to unchecked transfers of drugs between inpatient and outpatient settings without proper documentation. The network also fell short in maintaining accurate stock records of controlled substances.

Responding to these revelations, LVHN has been working closely with federal prosecutors and the DEA. They’ve bolstered physical security, invested in training, detection software, and hired compliance experts. U.S. Attorney David Metcalf commended LVHN for their cooperation but emphasized that ‘the penalties here are substantial’.

Thomas Hodnett, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Philadelphia Field Division, echoed this sentiment: ‘DEA holds medical professionals to a high standard to protect public safety.’

The case was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Peter Carr and Charlene Keller Fullmer, alongside former auditor Dawn Wiggins. It’s worth noting that all claims resolved by the settlement are allegations only, with no determination of liability made.
