Leroy O’Ryan, Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Illinois 2014

Federal prison awaits a 67-year-old Flora man, convicted of possessing firearms despite his previous felony conviction, according to a recent sentencing.

Leroy O’Ryan was handed a 24-month prison sentence, to be followed by two years of supervised release and fined $2,000, as part of his sentence on July 10, 2014. This punishment stems from O’Ryan’s plea of guilty to a one-count federal indictment.

Charges against O’Ryan alleged that on August 12, 2013, he knowingly possessed a Bushmaster, Carbon 15 model, .223 caliber rifle and a Ruger, P85MKII, 9mm semi-automatic pistol, both of which he sold to an undercover officer and a confidential informant working for law enforcement.

O’Ryan’s case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney George Norwood handled the case.

The crime of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm is a serious offense, and Leroy O’Ryan’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law.

O’Ryan’s case serves as a reminder of the severe consequences one faces when engaging in such illicit activities. His actions not only put himself at risk but also endangered the community.

The court’s decision to sentence O’Ryan to 24 months in federal prison and impose a fine of $2,000 sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
