Corpus Christi, Texas – A federal grand jury has slapped Brenli Lescaille-Durand, a 32-year-old Cuban national, with serious charges after he allegedly turned a smuggling attempt into a bloodbath on U.S. Highway 281. According to U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Patrick, the defendant faces an onslaught of accusations, including assaulting law enforcement during his capture.
Lescaille-Durand is charged with two counts of unlawful transportation of undocumented aliens by means of a motor vehicle and two counts of assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers or employees. The charges stem from an August 18 incident where the suspect allegedly picked up multiple individuals from Mexico and Honduras near the Falfurrias Border Patrol checkpoint.
Law enforcement gave chase when Lescaille-Durand refused to stop, leading a high-speed pursuit that ended with the suspects fleeing into the brush. Authorities managed to apprehend Lescaille-Durand, but not before he laid hands on two officers, punching and kicking them while attempting to escape.
Should the charges hold, Lescaille-Durand could face up to five years for alien transporting and an additional eight years for his alleged assault. The severity of his sentence would also include a possible fine of $250,000 per count.
The Border Patrol and FBI led the investigation into this grim case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Marin is now handling the prosecution. An indictment is merely an accusation, and Lescaille-Durand is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
