Leslie Spencer, Attempting to Possess with Intent to Distribute Controlled Substances, Florida 2021

Fed-up Floridians learned that a local correctional officer thought he was above the law, but a 30-month prison sentence is about to make him think twice. Leslie Spencer, a 49-year-old Port Charlotte resident, was sentenced by United States District Judge Thomas P. Barber for attempting to possess with the intent to distribute controlled substances.

According to court records, Spencer worked as a correctional officer at the Charlotte Correctional Institution’s offsite work camp in Fort Myers. His duties included keeping prisoners safe and secure, but his true loyalty seemed to be to the highest bidder.

Spencer’s downfall began in March 2021, when he agreed to smuggle three ounces of methamphetamine, three ounces of MDMA, and two cellphones into the prison for an inmate working as an FBI confidential source. The source was instructed to package the items discreetly, and Spencer even provided additional instructions on how to evade the facility’s security measures.

After the deal was agreed upon, Spencer met with an undercover FBI special agent posing as a supplier of drugs. The two met in the parking lot of a Fort Myers retail store, where the undercover agent provided Spencer with sham methamphetamine and MDMA, cellphones, and payment for the smuggling operation. Upon leaving the retail store, Spencer was arrested by federal agents.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and it was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael V. Leeman. Spencer’s sentence is a reminder that no one is above the law, not even those responsible for enforcing it.

With his freedom and career in shambles, Leslie Spencer will be serving 30 months in federal prison for his crimes. This lengthy sentence is a testament to the FBI’s dedication to keeping our communities safe and holding accountable those who would seek to undermine that safety.

Federal authorities will continue to crack down on corruption and drug trafficking in our state, and we will keep you informed of any new developments in this case.
