LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kenneth Jones, 32, is facing a long stretch behind bars after a federal judge slammed him with a 180-month sentence Monday for a drug and gun cocktail that flooded Lexington streets. Jones pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges, including possession with intent to distribute massive amounts of methamphetamine and fentanyl, and illegally possessing firearms as a convicted felon. This isn’t just about drugs; it’s about a repeat offender putting a dangerous product on the streets and arming himself while doing it.
The bust started in August 2020, when law enforcement hit Jones’ residence and vehicle. They weren’t disappointed. Cops seized two firearms – a .23 caliber pistol and a .40 semi-automatic – alongside a substantial haul of narcotics: 25 grams of fentanyl and a whopping 192 grams of methamphetamine. Jones readily admitted he intended to push these deadly substances. It was a clear operation, not some personal stash.
But the trouble didn’t stop there. February 2021 brought another scene – a shooting at a Lexington residence. Officers found Jones and a woman desperately calling for help. Inside, they discovered a woman suffering from a gunshot wound, and Jones, conveniently, still holding a firearm. A subsequent search turned up even more drugs: 125 grams of fentanyl and a staggering 391 grams of methamphetamine. This guy wasn’t just dealing; he was *living* the life.
Federal prosecutors weren’t letting Jones off easy, and rightly so. He’d already been convicted in March 2017 of Trafficking a Controlled Substance First degree, a felony that should have kept him far away from firearms. Yet, here he was, armed and dealing again. Jones pleaded guilty in August 2021, finally facing the music for his criminal behavior.
Under federal guidelines, Jones will be required to serve at least 85 percent of his 15-year sentence. Once released, he’ll be under the watchful eye of the U.S. Probation Office for another five years – assuming he can stay out of trouble. The sentence was announced by Carlton S. Shier, IV, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, alongside officials from the ATF and Lexington Police Department.
This case was part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” program, a nationwide effort to cut down on violent crime. It’s a holistic approach, combining aggressive law enforcement with prevention and reentry programs. Shier is coordinating these efforts locally, working with various agencies to try and clean up the streets of Eastern Kentucky. The investigation was conducted by ATF and the Lexington Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Cynthia Rieker handling the prosecution.
