Today, the justice system dealt a decisive blow against political terrorism. Ryan Wesley Routh, 59, was handed a life sentence plus 84 months for his attempt to assassinate President Donald J. Trump and assault a federal law enforcement officer.
In a Fort Pierce courtroom, Judge Aileen M. Cannon imposed the maximum penalty after Routh’s conviction on five counts. Attorney General Pamela Bondi called Routh’s actions a “heinous attempted assassination” that targeted our democratic system.
FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the seriousness of Routh’s plan to kill a presidential candidate, noting that today’s sentence was a victory against political violence. Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that America resolves disputes through civil discourse, not force.
U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones praised the courage of U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Robert Fercano, whose actions prevented a national tragedy. The sentence was also a stark reminder that political violence is un-American and will be met with swift justice.
The investigation into Routh’s plot was extensive, involving multiple law enforcement agencies including the ATF, Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office, and Martin County Sheriff’s Office. Special Agent in Charge Brett Skiles of the FBI Miami Field Office praised the investigative team for their tireless work, leading to today’s outcome.
Routh will spend the rest of his life behind bars for a crime that could have reshaped American history. The sentence serves as a powerful message that those who threaten public safety with violence will face severe consequences.
