LINCOLN, NEBRASKA – Dylan M. Johnson, 26, of Lincoln, is headed to federal prison for fifteen years after a bust involving nearly 400 grams of methamphetamine and an illegally possessed AR-15 rifle. U.S. Attorney Susan Lehr announced the sentence handed down on June 12, 2024, in federal court.
The case began to unravel on May 1, 2023, when investigators made contact with Johnson at a Lincoln hotel. As they approached, Johnson ditched multiple baggies containing what turned out to be methamphetamine. A subsequent search of his room revealed a full-blown drug operation: more meth, approximately 5 grams of cocaine, empty baggies used for distribution, a scale for weighing, around $550 in cash, and a heat sealer. The scene screamed drug dealer.
But the inventory didn’t stop at narcotics. Law enforcement also discovered a black Omni Hybrid AR-15 rifle, along with two magazines loaded with 21 rounds of ammunition. Johnson, a convicted felon, readily admitted to knowing he was prohibited from owning a firearm. He confessed to purchasing the weapon just the day before his arrest, claiming it was for “protection” during his drug transactions – a transparent attempt to justify an illegal possession.
The seized methamphetamine, sent to the State Crime Lab for analysis, totaled 388 grams, with 370 grams being pure methamphetamine. This wasn’t a small-time operation; Johnson was moving serious quantity. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard didn’t buy the ‘protection’ excuse, sentencing Johnson to 180 months – fifteen years – in federal prison. There’s no parole in the federal system, meaning Johnson will serve the entirety of his sentence.
Following his release, Johnson will face a five-year term of supervised release, a period where his movements and activities will be closely monitored. The Nebraska State Patrol and the Lincoln Police Department spearheaded the investigation, bringing this dangerous individual to justice. This conviction sends a clear message: trafficking drugs and illegally possessing firearms will not be tolerated in Nebraska.
