Two women from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, were sentenced for their roles in a violent assault that left a victim severely injured.
Lisa Lone Eagle, 36, and Kendra Belt, 41, were convicted of Assault With a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, respectively.
They were sentenced on November 7, 2016 by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange.
Lisa Lone Eagle was sentenced to 63 months in custody while Kendra Belt received a 37-month sentence. Both women will be on supervised release for a period of 3 years following their release from custody.
They were also ordered to pay a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution was left open for a period of 30 days.
The assault occurred on September 5, 2015 at the victim’s residence, where Lone Eagle had been living for approximately 1.5 years. Lone Eagle and Belt became angry with the victim, and the situation escalated into a violent confrontation.
Lone Eagle pulled down shelves in the living room, punched the victim at least eight times, and then kicked and stomped him multiple times while wearing cowboy boots. She also hit the victim with the head of a sledgehammer. Belt joined in, kicking the victim while he was down and attempting to strangle him.
At one point, the victim lost consciousness, and the two women thought he was dead. They attempted to hide his body in the crawlspace of the residence but were unable to do so. They then put a blanket over the victim, poured kerosene on it, and attempted to light it on fire. However, they were unsuccessful.
The victim eventually regained consciousness, got up, and escaped the residence. He collapsed nearby and was discovered by a neighbor.
The case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case. Lone Eagle and Belt were immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
