A Topeka woman has been caught with her hand in the cookie jar, embezzling over $400,000 from her employer.

Lisa M. Davenport, 42, of Topeka, Kansas, pleaded guilty Monday to one count of interstate transportation of embezzled funds.

The crime occurred while she was an officer manager for Kansas Associates, Inc., which was the Prudential Real Estate franchise in Topeka. The company is now known as Berkshire Hathaway Home Services.

A forensic audit determined she embezzled approximately $416,000 from the company by taking proceeds from the company’s commissions and depositing them into her personal account.

Sentencing is set for January 4. She faces a maximum penalty of 10 years and fine up to $250,000.

U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom commended the FBI and Assistant U.S. Attorney Rich Hathaway for their work on the case.

The case serves as a reminder that embezzlement is a serious crime that can have severe consequences. It’s essential for businesses to implement robust internal controls to prevent such incidents.
