Lorain Correctional Officer Marlon Taylor Sentenced for Inmate Assault

Marlon Taylor, a former corrections officer for Lorain County, has been handed an 18-month prison sentence following his conviction for the brutal assault of an inmate. The 47-year-old Vermilion native was working at the Lorain County Jail on July 29, 2012, when he is alleged to have struck the inmate multiple times.

According to court documents, Taylor’s actions caused substantial bodily harm to the victim and violated his right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment. The sentence, announced by Acting Assistant Attorney General Jocelyn Samuels for the Civil Rights Division, reflects the Department of Justice’s commitment to safeguarding the constitutional rights of all Americans.

“The use of excessive force by corrections officers undermines our system of justice and the rule of law,” said Samuels. “Today’s sentence underscores that the DOJ will not hesitate to protect citizens’ constitutional rights.”

U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach echoed the sentiment, noting, “While the vast majority of law enforcement officials do a great job, those who abuse their power and privileges must be held accountable.” Special Agent in Charge Stephen D. Anthony emphasized the FBI’s dedication to investigating such incidents, stating, “Any allegation of abuse or excessive force involving law enforcement officers takes on a particular sense of urgency and will continue to be a priority for the FBI.”

The investigation was led by the FBI’s Cleveland Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Antoinette T. Bacon and Lauren Bell, as well as Trial Attorney Betsy Biffl, prosecuting the case.
