Lorain Man Charged in 3 Robberies
A 33-year-old Lorain man has been charged with three counts of robbery, including the holdup of a local bank and convenience store, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Eric Castillo, 33, was indicted by a grand jury on three counts of robbery, including one count of bank robbery and two counts of robbery affecting interstate commerce, said U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach.
The indictment alleges that Castillo robbed the Chase Bank, located at 2232 Fairless Drive, Lorain, Ohio, on January 18, 2014, a federally insured financial institution.
He is also accused of robbing the CommStar Community Credit Union, located at 5609 West Erie Avenue, in Lorain, on January 8, 2014, and the Kwik Mart convenience store at 3155 Pearl Avenue, in Lorain, on January 25, 2014.
If convicted, Castillo’s sentence will be determined by the court after review of factors unique to this case, including his prior criminal record, if any, his role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation. In all cases, the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum and in most cases it will be less than the maximum.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew B. Kall following an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Lorain Police Department, and other local law enforcement agencies.
Castillo is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and the indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. It will be up to the government to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
