Robert B. Ray, 52, of Lorain, is facing serious charges after a grand jury returned a two-count indictment against him. Ray is accused of receiving and distributing visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, and possessing child pornography, according to U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach for the Northern District of Ohio.
The indictment, which was handed down after an investigation by the FBI Cleveland Field Office, Elyria Resident Agency, charges Ray with two crimes. If convicted, the defendant’s sentence will be determined by the Court after a review of factors unique to this case, including the defendant’s prior criminal record, if any, the defendant’s role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation. In all cases, the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum and in most cases it will be less than the maximum.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian M. McDonough, who is leading the effort to hold Ray accountable for his alleged crimes. An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Ray, a Lorain resident, is accused of engaging in some of the most heinous crimes imaginable. The charges against him are serious and carry significant penalties. If convicted, Ray could face a lengthy prison sentence, as well as other consequences.
The investigation into Ray’s alleged crimes was led by the FBI Cleveland Field Office, Elyria Resident Agency. Their efforts have led to this indictment, which is a significant step forward in the case against Ray.
The case against Ray is a reminder that child exploitation is a serious crime that will not be tolerated in our community. We must work together to protect our children and hold those who would harm them accountable.
We will continue to follow this case and bring you updates as more information becomes available.
