Crime journalist’s investigation into Eduardo Rios Velasquez’s dark deeds reveals a chilling conspiracy to commit murder for hire and distribute cocaine. The Lorain man, aged 38, has been sentenced to nearly 24 years in prison by the federal court.
Velasquez’s co-conspirator, Angel Cordero, an inmate at Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution, faces a 25-year sentence, which will be served consecutive to his existing 40-year term. Both were convicted on charges of conspiracy to commit murder for hire and to distribute cocaine by a jury last year.
The men’s sordid past as incarcerated together provided Cordero with the opportunity to contact Velasquez via contraband phone. Together, they plotted to kill T.G., a woman named in court documents, offering payment in exchange for her address. Cordero also brokered deals involving large shipments of cocaine.
U.S. Attorney Justin E. Herdman praised the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies, saying that this case averted a tragedy. Special Agent Angel M. Melendez from HSI New York emphasized the reach of justice even when defendants are serving sentences like Cordero’s.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Eric B. Smith highlighted the relentless nature of Velasquez’s crime and commended law enforcement agencies for their efforts. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brian McDonough, Brad Beeson, and Hiral Mehta, following an investigation by multiple federal agencies.
This chilling tale of greed and violence serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some will go to in the name of crime. Let’s hope Velasquez has learned his lesson before seeking further justice from behind bars.
