ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A chilling act of violence shook the quiet streets of Los Lunas, New Mexico, as 49-year-old Russell Wheeler allegedly shot a man in the face with a revolver. The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to an urgent care clinic and later to the University of New Mexico Hospital for treatment. Wheeler, allegedly fled the scene on a motorcycle, leaving the bleeding victim behind.
According to a criminal complaint filed against Wheeler, the shooting occurred on May 22 in Los Lunas. The brief altercation between Wheeler and the victim ended with the victim suffering a gunshot wound to the face and mouth. Wheeler, who was driving a motorcycle, sped away from the scene, leaving the victim to seek medical attention.
The FBI Violent Crime Task Force, with assistance from the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police, investigated the case. Assistant United States Attorneys Jaymie L. Roybal and Alexander Uballez are prosecuting the case.
Wheeler, a convicted felon, faces a severe charge: being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. His past convictions, including possession of a controlled substance in 2005 and aggravated fleeing from law enforcement in 2007, disqualify him from owning firearms or ammunition.
A complaint is only an allegation, and Wheeler is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison. Wheeler was taken into custody and will remain there pending trial.
The investigation and subsequent charges highlight the ongoing struggle to combat gun violence in New Mexico. The case serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of violent crime. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
Wheeler’s detention hearing marked a significant step in the justice process. The outcome of this case will have a lasting impact on the community and serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit the law for their own gain.
