Louisiana Man, Assault on Federal Officer, Louisiana, 2021

Pollock, Louisiana resident Ronald Alfred Bryan, 70, is facing federal charges after the feds connected him to the January 6th Capitol riot. Bryan isn’t accused of just being there; he’s alleged to have actively assaulted law enforcement, escalating the chaos with a brazen grab for a US Capitol Police (USCP) riot shield.

Court documents and open-source video show Bryan, wielding a wooden pallet for cover, pushing towards a line of officers defending a landing on the Capitol’s Northwest Steps. He didn’t stop at defense, though. The footage allegedly shows him forcibly relieving another rioter of a USCP riot shield, then charging into the police line – a clear attempt to break through and disrupt the proceedings.

This wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. Bryan, according to the feds, didn’t keep his actions quiet. He reportedly bragged about the assault in subsequent videos circulating online. He allegedly boasted about stealing a baton and the shield, claiming to have knocked two officers to the ground and requiring six to subdue him. The videos demonstrate a chilling disregard for law enforcement and the gravity of his alleged crimes.

The investigation, a joint effort between the FBI’s New Orleans and Washington Field Offices, utilized the readily available open-source video to identify Bryan. The footage was key to building the case, showing him not only taking the shield but also using it aggressively against officers. Another rioter also picked up the discarded pallet and joined in the assault, further endangering the officers.

Bryan is now facing felony charges of civil disorder and assaulting a federal officer, alongside five misdemeanor counts, including theft of government property and disorderly conduct. He was arrested August 16, 2023, and made his initial court appearance in the Western District of Louisiana. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, along with the Department of Justice’s National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, are prosecuting the case, aiming to hold Bryan accountable for his actions.

With hundreds already arrested in connection to the January 6th breach, the feds show no sign of slowing down. This case highlights the ongoing efforts to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those who allegedly participated in the attack on the Capitol. Bryan’s alleged actions, coupled with his brazen post-riot boasting, paint a picture of a calculated escalation of violence on a day already marked by chaos and unrest. The investigation continues.
