Lovington resident Michael Gibson, 28, is headed to federal prison for 90 months after admitting to selling nearly 50 grams of methamphetamine to an undercover agent in 2014. The sentence, handed down in Las Cruces federal court, marks the end of a long-running investigation tied to one of Lea County’s persistent underground drug trades.
Gibson was arrested May 20, 2015, on a criminal complaint alleging he distributed 55.6 grams of meth and possessed a firearm during the transaction. According to court records, on September 10, 2014, Gibson handed off the drugs during a controlled buy and placed a pistol in his lap—actions that triggered a federal enhancement for weapon use in drug crimes.
Indicted on October 14, 2015, Gibson faced charges of meth distribution and carrying a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. A superseding indictment filed April 21, 2016, added a forfeiture demand: $2,900 in cash tied to the offense. That money will now be turned over to the U.S. government.
On July 18, 2016, Gibson pleaded guilty to the sole charge of meth distribution, admitting he sold approximately 49.54 grams to an undercover agent. The plea deal dropped the firearm count but secured a stiff prison term and four years of supervised release post-incarceration.
The case was built by agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) out of Las Cruces and the Lea County Drug Task Force—a multi-agency unit that includes police from Hobbs, Lovington, Eunice, Tatum, Jal, and the county sheriff’s office. The task force operates under the NM HIDTA Region VI, a federally funded initiative targeting high-intensity drug zones.
Prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Selesia L. Winston and Renee L. Camacho, the conviction underscores federal heat on mid-level traffickers in southeastern New Mexico. With meth flooding rural communities, law enforcement continues to prioritize cases where drugs and guns collide—just as Gibson’s did on that September night in 2014.
