LOWER BRULE, S.D. – In a shocking turn of events, 23-year-old Joseph Thompson was sentenced to 18 months in prison for Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.
According to court documents, Thompson was involved in a heated argument with the victim at a party in Lower Brule on May 3, 2014. The situation escalated, and Thompson ended up assaulting the victim, leaving him with a deep wound to the forehead that required 27 sutures to close.
Thompson was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 15, 2014, and later pleaded guilty on November 18, 2014. U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange delivered the verdict on February 2, 2015.
As part of his sentence, Thompson will also serve 2 years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Lower Brule Agency, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges handled the prosecution.
Thompson was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentence, stating that the justice system has served its purpose in this case.
