Lower Brule man Cody Joseph Crazy Bull is headed to prison after a federal judge handed down a 60-month sentence for domestic abuse.
A U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange delivered the sentence on September 4, 2018.
Crazy Bull’s conviction stems from an October 2017 incident in which he verbally and physically assaulted his then-girlfriend, strangling her, grabbing and twisting her arm, and pulling out chunks of her hair.
At the time of the assault, Crazy Bull was a repeat offender with a history of assaulting intimate partners. He had at least two prior convictions for similar offenses.
Crazy Bull was indicted by a federal grand jury on February 14, 2018, and pled guilty to the charges on June 12, 2018. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Lower Brule Agency.
Crazy Bull was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing.
He also received a special assessment of $100 to be paid into the Federal Crime Victims Fund and three years of supervised release following his prison term.
U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons announced the sentence, which is the result of a thorough investigation and prosecution by federal authorities.
