A Lower Brule man has been sentenced for his role in a federal crime. Jewell Iron Heart, 21, was sentenced to 21 months in custody, 5 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, according to U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson.
Iron Heart was convicted of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender, a charge stemming from his failure to update his sex offender registration after he absconded from the Community Alternatives of the Black Hills (CABH) facility in Rapid City.
Iron Heart had previously admitted to an offense that requires him to register as a sex offender for life. He registered as a sex offender for the first time in May 2012, but failed to update his registration after leaving the CABH facility on August 18, 2013.
The investigation into Iron Heart’s actions was conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
A federal grand jury had indicted Iron Heart on September 17, 2013, and he later pled guilty on November 19, 2013. He was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service after his sentencing.
The Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act requires individuals who have been convicted of certain offenses to register with law enforcement and update their registration regularly. Iron Heart’s failure to do so has resulted in his conviction and sentencing.
U.S. Attorney Johnson noted that the office will continue to work to protect the public and hold offenders accountable for their actions. The case is a reminder of the importance of registration requirements for sex offenders.
