Monica Quilt, Assault by Striking, Beating and Wounding, South Dakota 2013

A Lower Brule woman has been sentenced to six months in prison after a brutal assault that left her victim with serious injuries.

Monica Quilt, 42, was handed down the sentence by U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on November 14, 2013, following her conviction for Assault by Striking, Beating and Wounding.

According to court documents, the assault occurred between May 8, 2013, and May 9, 2013, during which Quilt and the victim, who were involved in an intimate dating relationship, had both been out drinking separately.

The victim suffered injuries to his neck and face that required medical treatment, and Quilt was subsequently indicted by a federal grand jury on May 15, 2013.

Quilt pleaded guilty to an Information on September 4, 2013, and was sentenced to six months of imprisonment, one year of supervised release, and a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The investigation into the assault was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Lower Brule Agency, and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges.

Quilt is set to self-report to the U.S. Marshals Service on December 12, 2013, to begin serving her sentence.

The sentence handed down to Quilt serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violent behavior, and the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of all individuals.
