GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Federico Santiago Quiroz Lucca, the de facto brain behind a notorious jewelry heist crew, was sentenced today to 45 months in federal prison for orchestrating thefts that raked in over $800,000 worth of stolen goods.
Lucca, also known as Christian Sergio Alessandro Hernandez Valenzuela, stood guilty after leading a gang that preyed on traveling jewelers. They would follow their victims for miles, culminating in at least $835,000 in losses. Today, the 52-year-old Los Angeles native faced justice via videoconference before United States District Judge James V. Selna.
The saga began in October 2017 and continued until April 2019 when Lucca and his cohort Jose Manuel Lopez Molina, 48, Roberto Alonso Castellanos, 51, and Jose Oscar Cupitre Nuñez, 48, were caught red-handed after monitoring jewelry stores, residences, and conventions across Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Denver. Their scheme was simple yet effective: identify a jeweler with valuable goods, follow them to vulnerable locations like gas stations or hotels, and rob them using various tricks, including posing as Good Samaritans.
One chilling incident involved Lucca and his crew following a jewelry salesman for four hours in Orange County. When the salesman stopped, he was pushed from behind, losing his bag filled with $400,000 in jewels. Another case saw a Connecticut-based jewelry business lose nearly $400,000 after being followed and robbed at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Lucca’s sentencing is a victory for law enforcement, with three of his associates already facing time in prison, while Jose Oscar Cupitre Nuñez awaits his fate on October 26. The FBI and Los Angeles Police Department played crucial roles in dismantling this criminal enterprise.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the cunning nature of organized crime rings that prey on unsuspecting individuals for financial gain. With justice served, Lucca will now pay for his crimes behind bars.
