A Puerto Rico man has been sentenced to life in prison for violent crimes, including firearm offenses, controlled substance offense, and assaulting federal officers. Luis Javier Correa-Figueroa, a.k.a. “Barney/Gordo”, was sentenced to life imprisonment by U.S. District Court Judge Pedro A. Delgado on April 4, 2017.
The convictions stem from Correa-Figueroa’s involvement in a firearm and drug trafficking offense, which occurred on July 7, 2015. According to the government, Correa-Figueroa intended to exchange two firearms in his possession for cocaine at the Plaza Guaynabo Shopping Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico. DEA agents intervened and executed the arrest, resulting in the confiscation of the firearms and the apprehension of Correa-Figueroa.
Correa-Figueroa was found guilty by a jury of 16 counts, including being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, illegal possession of a machinegun, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and assault upon a federal officer. The defendant’s actions resulted in the damage to three parked civilian vehicles and three official government vehicles.
The case was investigated by the DEA, FBI, and Puerto Rico Police Department Strike Force Unit. Assistant United States Attorneys Vanessa Bonhomme and Maria Montañez prosecuted the case.
Correa-Figueroa’s sentence is a result of his conviction on charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, illegal possession of a machinegun, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and assault upon a federal officer. His sentence is reflective of the severity of his crimes and the harm caused to the community.
