Felon Sentenced to 70 Months in Prison for Unlawful Firearm Possession
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In a shocking turn of events, Luis Mejia, 32, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, has been sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for violating federal firearms laws by unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition.
According to sources, Mejia was arrested on December 12, 2016, on a criminal complaint charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm on November 29, 2016. Mejia was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition due to his prior felony convictions for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon causing great bodily harm, and possession of a controlled substance.
Mejia was subsequently indicted on December 20, 2016, and charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition on November 29, 2016, in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. Mejia pled guilty to the indictment without the benefit of a plea agreement on April 20, 2017.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Albuquerque Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney David M. Walsh prosecuted the case.
Mejia will be on supervised release for three years after completing his prison sentence. This sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal firearms laws.
