Irving, Texas – In a shocking case of human exploitation, Luis Rivera, 19, of Irving, Texas, was sentenced to 188 months in federal prison for his role in a sex trafficking ring that targeted minors.
According to court documents, Rivera, also known as the ‘pimp’, conspired with Brady Rodriguez-Cruz, 33, to cause a 12-year-old girl, identified as Jane Doe, to engage in a commercial sex act. The scheme unfolded on December 23-25, 2014, in Irving.
Rivera met Jane Doe and three other minor females in Irving, where he learned that Jane Doe was only 12 years old. He then took the group to an empty apartment, where they were forced to stay overnight without access to food or money.
The next day, Rivera told the minors that they needed to engage in commercial sex acts to earn money for food. He made several phone calls to potential customers, including Brady Rodriguez-Cruz, who agreed to come to the location to engage in a commercial sex act.
Rodriguez-Cruz, also known as ‘the john’, brought another man with him to the apartment. Rivera then told the minors to line up so the men could select who they wanted to have sex with. Rodriguez-Cruz selected Jane Doe, who was only 12 years old, and engaged in commercial sex acts with her.
After the encounter, Rodriguez-Cruz paid Rivera and his minor male friend approximately $50, which was used to buy fast food for the minor girls. The case was investigated by the Irving Police Department and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, both members of the North Texas Trafficking Taskforce.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Cara Foos Pierce and John Kull prosecuted the case, which resulted in Rodriguez-Cruz being sentenced to 293 months in federal prison for his role in the conspiracy.
Rivera’s sentence of 188 months in federal prison is a stark reminder of the consequences of human trafficking. It is a crime that affects not only the victims but also their families and communities.
The case highlights the need for continued efforts to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
