PROVIDENCE – Luis Joel Sierra, 34, of Providence, faces up to 20 years in prison after being charged with setting fire to a police cruiser during a downtown riot on June 2, 2020.
The incident occurred as the city was rocked by violence, and according to investigators, Sierra is accused of igniting the flames by leaning inside the cruiser with flammable liquid and a lighter.
United States Attorney Aaron L. Weisman condemned the alleged actions, stating, ‘Senseless violence and vandalism are no way to effect change.’ Sierra’s arrest was the result of a joint investigation involving the FBI, Providence Police, and the United States Attorney’s Office.
Joseph R. Bonavolonta, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Boston Division, emphasized, ‘We will not stand for this type of destruction and violence.’
Providence Police Chief Colonel Hugh T. Clements, Jr., reinforced the stance against criminal behavior, declaring, ‘Those who believe they can come into the city and cause destruction must know that we will continue to take this very seriously.’
The investigation was aided by video evidence, social media, and tips from law enforcement tip lines. Sierra reportedly admitted his role in the arson during a recorded conversation.
Sierra appeared today before U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Lincoln D. Almond and was ordered detained in federal custody. Arson is punishable by 5-20 years imprisonment, up to three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
