A federal grand jury indictment was unsealed in San Diego on Monday, charging Maegan Hobbs and David Michael Richards Hansen-Taylor with distributing the fentanyl that resulted in the death of a 33-year-old San Diego resident.
According to court records, the pair sold the fatal dose of fentanyl in September 2024. On September 14, 2024, Hobbs allegedly warned the victim about the dangerous nature of the drugs she was selling, messaging him ‘to be careful with the next stuff.’ On September 15, 2024, the day the victim was found deceased, Hobbs allegedly messaged the victim, ‘Did you feel the Fetty [fentanyl] at least?’
The case against Hobbs and Hansen-Taylor is a stark reminder of the dangers of fentanyl and the devastating impact it has on communities across the country. The indictment reveals a calculated and callous disregard for human life, as the defendants continued to distribute the deadly substance even after the victim’s death.
Hobbs, 33, is charged with distribution of fentanyl resulting in death. If convicted, she faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. Hansen-Taylor, 33, is charged with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
The investigation was led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California, with assistance from the DEA and local law enforcement agencies. The case is a testament to the critical work being done to combat the fentanyl crisis and bring perpetrators to justice.
The indictment was unsealed on February 26, 2024. Hobbs and Hansen-Taylor are currently in custody and awaiting trial. A date for their arraignment has not been set.
The case is a reminder that fentanyl is a deadly substance that can have devastating consequences. We urge anyone with information about fentanyl distribution or trafficking to come forward and assist law enforcement in their efforts to combat this crisis.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California will continue to work tirelessly to investigate and prosecute those responsible for distributing fentanyl and other deadly substances.
