Mail Carrier Heists: Two More Indicted in Florida

MIAMI, FL – The brazen targeting of America’s mail carriers continues to draw federal heat, with two additional suspects now facing serious charges in connection with a multi-county robbery spree. Bernard Jerome Davis III, 20, and Jalen Dennis Elliott, 19, both of Port St. Lucie, Florida, were indicted May 6th, joining Jamal Travon Brown Weathers, 23, of Fort Pierce, in a 16-count superseding indictment.

The trio allegedly conspired to commit Hobbs Act robbery, ultimately robbing at least six U.S. Postal letter carriers between November 19, 2022, and October 21, 2023. The crimes spanned St. Lucie, Brevard, Orange, and Miami-Dade Counties, leaving postal workers fearing for their safety and disrupting mail delivery. The indictment details charges including Hobbs Act robbery, postal robbery, armed postal robbery, attempted Hobbs Act robbery, illegal possession of a U.S. Postal Service arrow key, and use or carrying a firearm during a crime of violence.

Jamal Travon Brown Weathers was initially charged in a federal criminal complaint back in December 2023. Following the latest indictment, all three men – Brown Weathers, Davis, and Elliott – are being held without bail pending trial. U.S. Magistrate Judge Shaniek Mills Maynard deemed them a continued threat to the public and a flight risk.

If convicted, the penalties are steep. Brown Weathers and Davis face a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years, potentially escalating to a lifetime behind bars. Elliott, facing a separate set of charges, could receive up to 70 years in prison. The case is being prosecuted by Managing Assistant U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Lineberger, signaling the seriousness with which federal authorities are treating these attacks on postal workers.

The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), the Fort Pierce Police Department, Miami Beach Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, and Port St. Lucie Police Department. U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida, and Inspector in Charge Juan A. Vargas of the USPIS, jointly announced the latest developments in the case.

Authorities are urging the public to report any stolen mail immediately to the Postal Inspection Service at www.uspis.gov/report or by calling 877-876-2455. Rewards are offered for information leading to the arrest of those involved in postal robberies. Allegations of Postal Service employee misconduct should be reported to the USPS OIG at 1-888-877-7644 or www.uspsoig.gov. Trial is scheduled to begin July 1 before U.S. District Court Judge K. Michael Moore in Fort Pierce. It’s crucial to remember that a criminal complaint and indictment contain allegations only, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
