WATERBURY, CT – In a disturbing case of mail theft, Careema Lewis, a former postal employee, has been sentenced to three years of probation for stealing mail while employed by the U.S. Postal Service.
Lewis, 33, of Waterbury, was ordered by U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden to perform 100 hours of community service while on probation. The sentence was handed down on date not specified after Lewis pleaded guilty to one count of theft of mail by a postal employee on September 26, 2019.
According to court documents and statements made in court, between September 2018 and January 2019, Lewis stole numerous pieces of mail, specifically greeting cards that contained gift cards or other items of value, while employed at the U.S. Post Office in Plymouth.
When confronted by investigators in January 2019, Lewis admitted to stealing between 20 and 50 gift cards from the mail. She subsequently surrendered approximately 10 gift cards that she had stolen from greeting cards, and approximately 17 pieces of stolen mail that she had in her vehicle and her purse.
The matter was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Margaret M. Donovan.
