A US Army major pleaded guilty to bribery charges in a Colorado federal court. Roderick D. Sànchez, 45, of Pueblo, Colorado, accepted over $200,000 in bribes from foreign companies in exchange for awarding Army contracts.

According to the indictment, Sànchez, who was stationed in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kuwait between 2004 and 2007, used his position to influence the awarding of contracts to certain companies. In exchange for the bribes, he recommended and awarded contracts to these companies.

The bribes included cash payments, luxury items such as Rolex watches, and other valuable items. Sànchez faces up to 15 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and five years of supervised release.

The case was investigated by the FBI, the Army’s Criminal Investigation Command, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, and the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction.

Sànchez is scheduled to be sentenced on January 19, 2011, at 8:30 a.m. before US District Court Judge Christine M. Arguello.

The charges against Sànchez are a result of a long-term investigation into corruption within the US Army’s contracting process. The case highlights the need for stricter controls and oversight to prevent such corruption in the future.
