Yakima, Washington – In a shocking turn of events, Anthony John Maldonado, 32, faced federal charges for a brutal attack on his partner, E.J., and was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison. Chief United States District Judge Stanley A. Bastian also imposed a 3-year supervised release following his term.
The incident unfolded at E.J.’s apartment in Wapato, Washington, where Maldonado initiated a violent argument that escalated into assault and strangulation. Despite a previous Deferred Sentence Agreement banning harm or harassment of E.J., Maldonado’s actions resulted in serious federal charges. Maldonado has been consistently abusive throughout their eight-year relationship.
Assistant United States Attorney Bree Black Horse emphasized the severity of non-fatal strangulation, pointing out its correlation with future domestic violence homicides. The FBI Seattle field office highlighted the importance of addressing abuse within tribal communities, particularly for Indigenous women who face increased victimization rates.
The case is part of the Department of Justice’s Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) Regional Outreach Program, aimed at preventing and responding to MMIP-related cases. Maldonado was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Black Horse.
W. Mike Herrington, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Seattle field office, expressed pride in the work done by investigators and tribal partners to ensure Maldonado’s accountability for his actions. The sentence sends a strong message against domestic violence and abuse in tribal communities.
