A Savannah man with a history of violence has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for carrying a gun in a mall, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama.
Malik Brown, 32, of Mobile, Alabama, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge R. Austin Huffaker Jr. after pleading guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, said the U.S. Department of Justice.
According to the indictment, on January 31, 2022, Brown was seen carrying a loaded 9mm handgun inside the Savannah Mall. Brown, who has a prior conviction for a violent felony, is considered an armed career criminal and was prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Separately, a Mobile man was sentenced to 7 years in federal prison for firing shots in a neighborhood, the U.S. Department of Justice announced. 38-year-old, Brandon Thomas, of Mobile, Alabama, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge R. Austin Huffaker Jr. after pleading guilty to one count of discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
The indictment stated that on February 15, 2022, Thomas fired shots in the 1000 block of West Oak Street in Mobile, putting the lives of others at risk.
The cases were investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Mobile Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Whisonant and David Estes prosecuted the cases.
The sentences were handed down on March 28, 2024.
