Mobile, AL – In a federal court hearing, Malik Johnson, 32, of Mobile, Alabama, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on gun charges after two separate incidents involving firearms.
Johnson was first arrested at a Savannah, Georgia mall when security found a loaded handgun in his waistband. He was subsequently charged with carrying a firearm in a school zone, a violation of 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1), and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 922(n).
Johnson has a prior felony conviction for a violent crime and was classified as an armed career criminal, which increased the severity of the charges. He pleaded guilty to the charges in February 2024 and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Kristi K. DuBose.
In a separate incident, Johnson fired shots in a neighborhood in Mobile, Alabama, which led to a federal charge of discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 924(c)(1)(A)(iii). Johnson pleaded guilty to this charge in March 2024.
Johnson’s sentencing comes after a series of high-profile gun cases in the state. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama has been cracking down on gun violence, and this case is a clear example of the consequences of carrying a firearm illegally.
Johnson’s 10-year prison sentence reflects the seriousness of the charges and the danger he poses to the community. The U.S. Attorney’s Office reminds the public that carrying a firearm in a school zone and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence are serious offenses with severe penalties.
