Tax Fraud Strikes in Buffalo
A Buffalo woman has pleaded guilty to a tax fraud charge, leaving the community stunned. Malisha Mobley, 30, of Buffalo, NY, was found guilty of conspiracy to defraud the government in the filing of false tax returns.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, and a $250,000 fine. This is a serious offense that has resulted in significant losses to the Internal Revenue Service and New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, totaling $37,193.00.
Mobley obtained fraudulent W-2 forms from James Chatmon and used the forms to file false tax returns for tax years 2011, 2012 and 2014. As a result, she obtained tax refunds which she was not entitled to receive.
In addition, Mobley recruited two other individuals to file false tax returns by providing them with the fraudulent W-2 forms obtained from James Chatmon. Those individuals used the forms to file false tax returns for tax year 2012.
The plea is the result of an investigation by Special Agents of the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division. Sentencing is scheduled for August 20, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. before Judge Richard J. Arcara.
We will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available. In the meantime, the community is left to wonder about the extent of Mobley’s actions and the impact on the community.
