A Rosebud man has pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal officer, a crime that carries a maximum 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Jess Raymond Young, 36, of Rosebud, South Dakota, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on March 21, 2013, and pleaded guilty to Assault on a Federal Officer.
The crime was committed on November 21, 2012, while Young was in custody at the Oglala Sioux Tribal Jail in Pine Ridge. Young shoved a correctional officer against the wall and bit her multiple times, sparking the investigation by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins is prosecuting the case.
Young was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing, with a presentence investigation ordered.
The community is still reeling from the incident, and many are left wondering what drove Young to commit such a heinous crime.
Young’s sentencing date will be scheduled at a later time, but one thing is certain: he will have to face the music for his actions.
