Douglas LaRoche, Abusive Sexual Contact, South Dakota 2013

A Lower Brule man has been sentenced to 35 months of imprisonment for Abusive Sexual Contact.

A federal grand jury indicted Douglas LaRoche, 44, on August 22, 2012, for the charge. He pleaded guilty to a Superseding Information on January 4, 2013.

The victim, who remains anonymous, was unable to consent to the sexual contact due to her physical and mental state. The incident occurred on August 12, 2012, at her residence after a night of drinking with LaRoche and others.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced LaRoche’s sentencing, which was carried out by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on May 1, 2013. LaRoche must also serve 5 years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges handled the prosecution. LaRoche was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Service following his sentencing.

LaRoche will also be required to register as a sex offender as part of his sentence. The details of the case serve as a stark reminder of the importance of consent in all relationships.
