Shane Coleman, Assault Resulting in Substantial Bodily Injury, South Dakota 2014

LOWER BRULE, South Dakota – In a disturbing case of domestic violence, Shane Coleman, a 25-year-old man from Lower Brule, South Dakota, was sentenced to 15 months in custody for Assault Resulting in Substantial Bodily Injury to a Spouse or Dating Partner.

According to court documents, Coleman’s conviction stems from an incident on July 11, 2013, when he and his victim, who had been in a relationship since 2009, began to argue. The victim attempted to leave the residence with their children, but Coleman picked her up and threw her to the floor, knocking the wind out of her.

Coleman then proceeded to strangle the victim, who was on one knee on the floor, until she lost consciousness. When she regained consciousness, she was able to leave the residence with her children. This heinous act of violence left the victim with substantial bodily injury.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentencing, which took place on May 28, 2014, before U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Coleman was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and serve 2 years of supervised release after his prison sentence.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case. Coleman was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after the sentencing.
