Lucas Curley, a 24-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been sentenced for assaulting a federal officer. According to the charges, Curley forcibly assaulted, resisted, opposed, impeded, intimidated, and interfered with a Cheyenne River Sioux Detention Officer on March 2014.

The incident occurred at the Walter Miner Law Enforcement Center in Eagle Butte. The officer, employed under a contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, was engaged in the performance of their official duties at the time of the assault.

Curley was indicted by a federal grand jury on October 15, 2014, for Assaulting, Resisting, or Impeding an Officer Involving Physical Contact. He subsequently pled guilty to Assaulting, Resisting, and Impeding an Officer on December 8, 2014.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno handed down the sentence on March 4, 2015. Curley was ordered to serve 5 months in custody, 3 months of home confinement, 1 year of supervised release, and pay a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The conviction arose from a joint investigation by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuted the case.

Curley was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving his sentence. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting law enforcement officers and the consequences of assaulting them.
