A violent crime has shaken the community of Henderson, North Carolina. On October 18, 2020, Caleb Malik Batchelor, a 23-year-old man, shot a female victim multiple times at the Highland Green Apartment Complex in Henderson. The victim, who was involved in a domestic dispute with Batchelor, sustained life-threatening injuries but survived.

According to law enforcement, Batchelor, a convicted felon with previous felony drug convictions, was on probation when he committed the crime. The investigation revealed that Batchelor possessed the ammunition used in the shooting and purchased additional ammunition from a gun store in Henderson on November 16, 2020, just a month after the incident.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Henderson Police Department, and the Vance County Sheriff’s Office, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert J. Dodson prosecuted the case.

G. Norman Acker, III, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, made the announcement after sentencing by U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III. Batchelor pled guilty to the charges on June 10, 2021, and was subsequently sentenced to 235 months in federal prison.

The severity of the sentence highlights the gravity of the crime and the importance of upholding federal laws. As a convicted felon, Batchelor is prohibited from possessing ammunition, and his actions put the lives of others at risk.
