Robert Joseph Marder, 32, of the Cherokee Nation, has been handed a 78-month federal prison sentence after assaulting an ex-partner with a door trim harboring a nail. The brutal attack occurred as Marder followed his former girlfriend from her apartment, kicking in the door and striking her repeatedly while she held their three-month-old child.
Marder’s term of imprisonment is followed by a mandatory three years of supervised release. Acting U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson highlighted the severity of the crime, emphasizing that children are not immune to the lasting effects of domestic violence.
On May 29, 2020, Marder targeted his ex-girlfriend at her own home, forcing her to flee with their infant. After breaking into her apartment, he continued the assault by striking her with a piece of door trim that had a nail sticking out. The woman was hospitalized after the incident.
The victim’s cries for help were heard by security officers, who detained Marder and summoned police. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Justin G. Bish and Benjamin D. Hargrove led the prosecution in this case.
Marder pleaded guilty on July 14, 2021, to assault with a dangerous weapon in Indian Country. His actions occurred within the Muscogee Nation reservation.
The FBI and Tulsa Police Department collaborated in investigating this heinous crime. Johnson reassured victims of domestic violence that his team is committed to seeking justice and providing support throughout the legal process.
