Columbia, South Carolina – In a shocking turn of events, Marcus Duran Singleton, a 38-year-old man from Orangeburg, has been indicted on federal gun charges and detained after a contested bond hearing in federal court in Columbia.
According to the indictment, Singleton was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The alleged incident took place on September 4, 2021, at a Cook-Out fast-food establishment in Orangeburg.
During the hearing, an ATF special agent testified that Singleton was allegedly involved in unlawfully pointing and presenting of a firearm at the employees of the fast-food establishment. The agent’s testimony sparked a heated debate, with the defense team arguing that the evidence was circumstantial and the prosecution insisting that the evidence was sufficient to detain Singleton.
After a lengthy deliberation, United States Magistrate Judge Paige J. Gossett ordered Singleton detained without bond pending resolution of the federal charge against him.
Singleton faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years, a fine of $250,000, and court-ordered supervision to follow any term of imprisonment if convicted.
The case is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, a program aimed at reducing violent crime. Assistant United States Attorneys Elle E. Klein and Elliott B. Daniels are leading the prosecution.
The offense listed in the indictment is merely an allegation, and Singleton is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
