A Rosebud woman was sentenced for her role in a horrific child abuse incident that left a young child seriously injured.
Maria Big Crow, 26, was convicted of Child Abuse after losing control of a vehicle she was operating, causing it to roll and seriously injuring one of the two small children on board.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the incident occurred on October 22, 2017, near Rosebud, South Dakota. Big Crow was driving after consuming multiple alcoholic beverages and lost control of the vehicle after drifting onto the shoulder and overcorrecting.
Big Crow was immediately taken into custody after the incident and was later indicted by a federal grand jury on June 12, 2018. She pled guilty to the charges on October 18, 2018.
U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence on January 3, 2019. Big Crow was sentenced to 14 months in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
This case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson prosecuted the case. Big Crow was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The incident serves as a harsh reminder of the dangers of drunk driving and the devastating consequences that can result.
