Miami, FL – In a disturbing case of cyberstalking, 21-year-old Mario F. Perez, of Spring, Texas, made repeated threats on social media to kill a young woman, according to a criminal complaint filed in the Southern District of Florida.
Perez, who allegedly created dozens of fake social media profiles to cyberstalk his victim, posted racist and derogatory comments, including racist comments about black Americans. He also shared the location of the Florida home of the victim’s parents and threatened to harm them.
Even after the victim moved to Los Angeles in July 2020, Perez continued to harass and threaten her. He found her new home address and shared it online, threatening to hurt or kill her.
Perez was arrested in Texas and made his initial appearance in the Southern District of Texas before U.S. Magistrate Judge Frances Stacey, who sits in Houston. Hearings will occur in the Southern District of Texas and the Southern District of Florida.
If convicted, Perez faces up to five years in federal prison. The FBI Miami and FBI Houston investigated this case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Hillary Irvin prosecuting.
A criminal complaint is merely an accusation that contains allegations. A defendant is innocent unless and until found guilty in a court of law.
The case highlights the dangers of online harassment and the importance of taking such threats seriously. Authorities urge anyone who may be a victim of online harassment to report it to the authorities immediately.
